Not using an ERP yet?
Midsized business typically appear to be very reluctant to adopt an ERP. Various factors may contribute to this, funds being an often-cited reason. We believe that the most important reason is a lack of knowledge about how ERP can help. There are many myths about ERP, that come in the way.

MYTH 1: ERP is costly and does not pay back
This was an impression created in the early days of ERP, when general computer literacy was low. Quite the opposite, most of today’s business users will be at home with any ERP, with some training and practice.
MYTH 2: ERP is not ‘suitable’ for midsized business.
MYTH 3: ERP needs specialists to use it
MYTH 4: Implementations are messy and take a long time
MYTH 5: My employees would not like to use an ERP, and the implementation may fail.
MYTH 6: Business data will be open and anyone can access it easily
MYTH 7: We will outgrow the ERP soon
MYTH 8: ERP offers only standard features, but we do things our way.
Business processes originate differently in different organizations. There is no universal standard process library or data dictionary for business, except those offered by Crest ERP and similar software. However, since the basic type of transactions in all businesses remain closely similar, a package like Crest ERP can be adopted easily, without any dilution in process rigour. On the contrary, ERP brings in more structured processes, with necessary checks and balances.
However, we can customize processes in Crest ERP, if the need is very strong. It would cost extra time and money, and may delay the implementation. Avoid customization as far as possible.
Can’t a simple accounting package keep us going?
Missing the 'Big Picture'
Accounting systems only keep records, not drive the business in ways that help in perform better, and grow.
Accounting is a 'by-product' for ERP!
ERP systems make accounting entries automatically, when the required ‘event’ has happened, such as invoicing a sale.
Passive systems
Accounting systems do not keep track of business transactions in terms of the activities performed by the various components of the business: its people, assets, machines, plants
Data, data, data...
ERP systems generate vast amounts of data in highly scalable relational database systems. This data can be used for detailed analysis and give managers the insights for better decisions.
Not designed for process management
On the other hand, the entire focus of ERP Systems is on driving business processes without interruption. You will find almost all day-to-day processes in an ERP, with a continuous thread running from beginning to end.
Not built for scale
Accounting systems are not designed to handle high transaction volumes, or a large number of users. They can become a bottleneck for growing businesses.
Comparison
Cloud based Software
- Cheaper upfront investment
- Predictable costs over time
- No additional hardware investments (e.g. Server infrastructure)
On-Premise Software
- Requires Upfront investment
- Requires Investment in Hardware, Software, Resource and IT costs
- May end up spending more money over the course of system’s life cycle
Cloud based Software
- Complete management and maintenance of the Hardware and Software is with the vendor and the client is completely relieved of this pain
On-Premise Software
- Ongoing IT support required for periodic maintenance of Hardware (Application and DB Server) and Software
- Daily Back up should be needed
Cloud based Software
- Application and Database security is the complete responsibility of the Service provider
- Cloud service provider can leverage economies of scale to provide security beyond what a client can own and implement
On-Premise Software
- Security of the application is the responsibility of the Client and this would increase the IT costs to implement the applicable tools and services
Cloud based Software
- As it’s a COTS – Commercially Off the Shelf product, best practices are incorporated a part of the product.
- Approach here is to “Client Adoption to the Standard Product” . Hence no Customizations are entertained and hence the Implementation time is less
On-Premise Software
- Typically, the approach here is “Product need to adopt to client needs” and hence the implementation time will be high as there would be demands for product customization
Cloud based Software
- Cloud service providers offer scale of services very quickly and at a very competitive cost
On-Premise Software
- Scaling the application is the responsibility of the client and the cost of scaling is comparatively high
Cloud based Software
- Cloud service providers have dedicated teams for compliance to readily meet and maintain the compliance requirements
On-Premise Software
- Client need to worry about ensuring compliance with all laws and regulations that apply to their business
Cloud based Software
- Restoration and meeting the SLA is the responsibility of the cloud service provider and the service provider will provide 24×7 support to take care of this
On-Premise Software
- If there is an Outage, then it’s the complete responsibility of the client to restore the application and the business continuity is in the hands of the client
